WELCOME TO ASIA BEEF NETWORK!

Cattle and beef markets and trade have developed at a rapid pace in China and Southeast Asia in recent years, with important implications for rural development, food, security, human nutrition, bio-security and trading. About 20 million people are involved in the cattle and beef industry in these countries. However, policy-makers and other stakeholders lack information to systematically assess, map and forecast scenarios for beef market and trade development at country and regional levels.

To understand the current situation and needs, the project titled “Review of Regional Beef Market and Trade in China and Southeast Asia”, funded by ACIAR and jointly implemented by the University of Queensland and HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation Vietnam, was carried out with several research studies.

The project provides valuable information and effective solutions to connect all the related parties to develop the regional beef industry, reduce disease risks associated with trans-boundary trade in the region, and improve cattle and beef trade environment for small-medium holders. These enable robust forecast and simulation of policy and trade scenarios in Southeast Asia, China and Australia.

Asiabeefnetwork.com, a channel of the project to release research findings, is a trusted information resource as well as a useful forum for policy makers, researchers, livestock/cattle raisers and beef traders in the region and around the world to exchange ideas.

AUSTRALIAN CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH

ACIAR was established in 1982 via the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research Act (ACIAR Act), described at the time as ‘An Act to encourage research for the purpose of identifying, or finding solutions, to, agricultural problems of developing countries’. It was updated by the ACIAR Amendment Act 2007 as part of the Government’s response to the Review of Corporate Governance of Statutory Authorities and Officeholders (Uhrig report).

The project was provided funding support by ACIAR.

In this project, HELVETAS Swiss Interncooperation is responsible for data, fieldwork, consultation and reporting in the Mekong region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam)

INSTITUTE OF POLICY AND STRATEGY FOR AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

IPSARD is working to improve quality of research and information activities. IPSARD believes that together with the support and co-operation from leaders, agencies and individual domestically and abroad as well as the international organizations, IPSARD will become a think-tank for Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, providing the analysis and results supporting strategy and policy formulation process in agriculture and rural development.

CENTER FOR INFORMATICS AND STATISTICS (CIS)- MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

The Center for Informatics and Statistics (CIS) is the focal point to implement all statistics activities (collecting, analysing, reporting) in the agricultural sector (within MARD, under MARD, and local state agricultural authorities).

PARTNERS IN MYANMAR

UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

This University started as Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Under Rangoon University in 1957. In 1967, it was upgraded to Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science (IAHVS) in Insein, Rangoon. In 1981, IAHVS was moved to Yezin, Pyinmana. In 1994, IAHVS was transferred under the governance of Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries. Before 1997, the course was 6 years and changed to 5 years course in 1997. In 1999, the name of IAHVS was changed to University of Veterinary Science.

MINISTRY OF LIVESTOCK AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

The development of livestock and fisheries sectors of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry up to the fiscal year of 1982-1983. In accordance with the decision of 3/6 cabinet meeting of State Council held on 10 February 1983, the Ministry of the Livestock and Fisheries was particularly organized on 15 March 1983. With Order No. (67/2013) dated 9 August 2013 of President Office, Republic of the Union of Myanmar and in accord with the agreement of the Seventh Regular Session of First Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has been renamed Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development.
